Atelier Emona 2024 Program
Design & Build
This year, Atelier Emona delves into the rich tradition and potential of sustainable architecture with a focus on one of nature’s most enduring materials: wood. Located in the heart of Ljubljana, Slovenia, this 8-day workshop, from August 17th to 24th, aims to fuse practical architectural education with the innovative use of Slovenian wood. Participants will engage in the design and construction of a wooden pavilion, transforming raw material into a testament to green construction.
The program leverages Slovenia’s vast forest resources to explore wood not only as a structural element but also as a key component in sustainable architectural design. The resulting structure from the workshop is not merely an educational exercise; it’s envisioned as a symbol of ecological design, demonstrating the capabilities of wood to enhance functionality and aesthetic value in modern architecture. This approach not only educates but also inspires, turning the pavilion into a dynamic space where design meets sustainability, much like the interplay of light and structure in a living monument to green innovation.

What will we do
Throughout our 8-day workshop, we will dive into the architectural capabilities of wood, focusing on its sustainability and versatility. Participants will engage in:
-Designing a wooden pavilion to understand and apply wood’s structural and aesthetic properties.
-Exploring sustainable building practices that leverage local Slovenian wood resources.
-Developing practical solutions that embody innovation in architecture, with a project that exemplifies green building.
Our goal is to meld theory with practice, creating a platform where future architects can gain hands-on experience in sustainable design.

Testimonials
"The theme of renovating a protected building and the opportunity to work within an international crowd truly enriched the experience. It showcased the power of teamwork on a global scale."

"The workshop was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, something I have never done before and I will definitely do it again. You make a lot of friends and learn a lot in a week. I think even if you don't win the competition it is a winning accomplishment to achieve. The perspectives on ways to approach an architecture project are quite different in Slovenia to my country and I will definetly take what I have learned back to my professors."

"My favorite part of the workshop were the people, meeting all the international students was amazing, and learning about the different cultures. I also really loved the presence of tutors, I had some really amazing conversations with them about my future in addition to getting general tips on what to do with our project. Overall I had a very good time. I would absolutely recommend this to an architecture student thinking of applying and I would love to come back next year."
Participant
"I loved the round table with the tutors to see what the variety of things you can do after your degree. This was a great meeting. The portfolio workshop was also brilliant, it really showed what the employees might look for."

"As a first-year architecture student, my experience at Atelier Emona broadened my knowledge of working because I had contact with 3rd year, 4th year, and master's students so I could see what it could lead me to and what are the paths that I could take. Having contact with people from different levels can increase your understanding of architecture."

"Atelier Emona gave me an insight about group work and about solving some difficult problems. I have a different perspective on solving problems and using the problem to my advantage, not my disadvantage. For me, the new community was the most valuable thing I have gained from the workhsop. It was really a fun experience. 10/10 come here!"
"Here I understood architecture in another way, I have larger perspectives. The tutors were so helpful and I learned that collaborating with friends and team members is so important. It was an interesting experience. I would recommend this to all architecture students as it is so important to have such experiences in your architecture student life and I think I am coming back for every workshop."

"It was very great to go through all the processes of creating and choosing the ideas. Atelier Emona has highlighted that the most important part is to have a meaningful idea and make it come true. With all the technical aspects that needed to be considered, because we were working with a very specific building with its constraints, I learned how to work on this and implement it into our project idea. My favorite part was working in groups with a very international environment."
